In our formal living room, the fireplace and bookshelves take up an entire wall. The previous owner stained all of the woodwork a rich, dark cherry color. I like the warmth of the woodwork, but adding the larger overhang on the new porc…

Honestly, I am not an organized person by trait. I have to work at it. It does not come easy. I have a friend who has a rule "touch it once." Not me, I am like the kid on Family Circus that goes from one room to another and can't remember what I was doing in the first place. I digress... on to organizing!
Organizing a Pantry can be pretty tricky. So many grocery items are awkward and bulky. We purchase in bulk at my home, so it was important to get my pantry area as organized (and pretty) as possible, then keep it that way.
When planning our new pantry area, I had an "ah-ha" moment that square and rectangular storage was the most space effective, so I utilized my newfound knowledge to make the most out of a rather small space. I used wire baskets to organize my canned food items. Adjustable shelving helped to add even more storage.
Larger baskets labeled with categories such as breakfast foods, chips, breads, and pasta keeps the bulky items tidy and easy to reach. Smaller baskets are labeled spices, nuts, sides, baking, etc. A top shelf is designated for the "extras"... things I use often enough to have a spare on hand.
Groceries come straight from the car into the pantry. Even my five year old knows that everything has a place.
Continuing the theme of "everything has a place," tension rods inside a drawer are magical! They keep ribbon and twine neatly in their place.
Can you believe that LAUNDRY has a place other than the floor....
could someone please tell that to my boys!
Happy New Year! Now, go organize something!

On our trip to Napa earlier this fall, we brought home some delicious Madeira dessert wines for gift giving. The short, fat bottles didn't fit in a typical wine bag, so I needed to get creative wrapping them.
First, I measured a length of wrapping paper that wraps around the bottle
Tartan Wrapping Paper can be purchased HERE

Then, I cut the paper into strips all the way to the neck of the bottle

Flip the paper over, wrap your bottle, and secure with tape

Next, gather all the strips and secure with a bow

Holding the base of each strip, pull the strip with your scissors just as you would with curling ribbon (note: if you pull too hard, you WILL tear the paper. I tore at least three or four strips clean off, but you don't notice when it's all finished)

Voila! Curled wrapping paper!

Finished bottle!

You can adapt this technique to most any paper! I might try a few left uncurled too!
Merry Gift Giving!!

One of my favorite things to make during the holidays is this Easy Spicy Chex Mix. I have been making it for so many years that I'm pretty sure our neighbors expect it now. This easy snack is perfect anytime. I like making huge batches at the same time... some for giving, some for eating.
Here is what you'll need :
2 pound bag of pre made Chex (you can make your own Chex, but using the premade obviously cuts down a lot of time)
4 cups cheese-its
4 cups oyster crackers
2 cups cashews
1 1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup powdered ranch mix
1/8 cup red pepper flakes
In a large bowl (or giant foil pan because I don't have a large enough bowl), combine Chex, Cheese-Its, Oyster Crackers, and nuts.
Drizzle vegetable oil and stir until everything is lightly coated.
Sprinkle Ranch Mix on top and mix to coat.
Add red pepper flakes and mix well.

I enlisted this little elf to help stir

All wrapped in clear cello bags tied up with string! Handmade ornaments complete the boys' teacher gifts this year.

Welcome back to Eleven Gables Christmas Home Tour (part 2)! If you missed part one, don't worry, you can catch up HERE! I am so thrilled to be participating in another installment of Blogger Stylin' Home Tours hosted by Lindsay of The White Buffalo Stylin' Co . If you are joining me from Jenna at Rain on a Tin Roof, Welcome!! If you missed her tour, be sure and stop by.
Today, I am showing you around the kitchen and keeping room. The new kitchen is where we spend the majority of our time, so it was important to keep the decor clean, simple, and colorful.
Blue and White is the anchor in my kitchen. My wedding dishes are Spode Blue Italian. I loved adding in Red and Green this Christmas.
My boys decorated this gingerbread house all on their own. This year, I purchased a preassembled gingerbread house and it made a world of difference with the littles!!
For my kitchen tree, I dug out my copper cookie cutters and tied them to the tree.
The vent hood mantle got a fresh boxwood wreath with a red bow and little deer mount.
The hot chocolate station is ready to go!!
The Keeping room:
2015 will bring new slips to Eleven Gables! The floral needs to go! But Mr. Eleven Gables put the breaks on my shenanigans this year after the porch remodel. The plaid wreaths on the windows were my mother's.
The side table holds china ornaments and sharpies at the ready for my whims!
My latest hobby is hand "painted" ornaments. I wrote an easy tutorial for you HERE.
Thank you for coming on my Christmas Kitchen tour!
Next week, I will feature an easy & delicious cocktail you will definitely want to keep in your Holiday Pinterest file!!
A few glimpses of my Christmas Tour, part one:
The children are nestled all snug in their beds; with visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads...
