One Room Challenge, Eleven Gables Style Week 1

Well, it's here.
The One Room Challenge by Calling It Home

This is the reason I started a blog in the first place.  I loved reading all of the ORC posts, but I couldn't comment on the posts without having some sort of google name, so I opened my own blogger account.  To comment only.  That was in 2009.  Enter 2014 and I thought I'd try my hand at blogging myself.  Two years later and here I am.... sucked into the challenge of remaking a room in six weeks.  What have I done?  Am I crazy?  My family will surely disown me.
This is our home, Eleven Gables:

The room I am remaking is my front bathroom.  It is for guests only.  We have another half bath across from the Butler's Pantry that is dubbed the "boy bathroom."  My guests are not allowed there.  Girls are not allowed there.  My boys have even commented that they are shocked when I use their bathroom.  I do, on occasion.  Someone has to go in there and clean it.  And that is the only day you will find me in there.  But I digress.  Let's talk fancy for a minute.  Powder Bath.  Sounds way more elegant than half bath.  So that is what I am going to refer to this one room challenge as, the Powder Bath.

Here she is in all of her pre-makeover beauty.

There is that dark cherry wood like you have seen in my before and after post HERE.  To stay within my budget of "not wanting to spend any money but will probably end up spending some" on this room, I am keeping the vanity.  I have to.  The one I really want is as much as a car.  Not going to happen.  Unless I win the lottery.  In that case, the vanity is the first to go.  But we will make her purdy, just wait and see.

I don't know WHY this ever had just a wood top?  It is awful!
This vintage tulip sink from Kohler is one of my favs.  I think it is unique.  Replacing it crossed my mind, but then I thought, no one has this sink anymore.  It's unique.  It's staying put.  My plan is to add a piece of marble to the top of this vanity.

Okay, let's talk walls.  The tiny trim under the moulding needs to go.  I don't get it.  Is it a border or something?  No idea.  That was the previous owner's design.  Also, the red paper. Buh-bye!
You like that double curtain thing going on in here?  Yeah, me neither!  I made the belgian linen cafe curtain for privacy and ease of use years ago when I made the kitchen curtains.  The balloon valance is left-over from the previous owner.  I've just been too busy lazy to take it down... Until NOW!!

Here are my plans:
(I'd make you a cute little lay-out thingy but I honestly don't know how to do that, so you get a punch list instead)
  • paint vanity
  • add custom marble top
  • remove weird trim and fill in holes that I will surely make
  • take down valance
  • remove wallpaper
  • float walls
  • paint walls or hang wallpaper (haven't decided yet)
  • new mirror
  • remove vent/fan
  • remove/replace light fixture with chandelier
  • rewire chandelier
  • add sconces
  • fluff and add any last minute details
My Pinterest Board Here shows the direction I am going.

  1. I'm so excited to see what you do with your "powder room"! I'm about to embark on my own bathroom room re-do in my husband's bathroom....it's been 10 years since it got an update, brown walls were all the rage back then (LOL). My handy dandy fix it man should start next week and I can't wait!

I know your room will look as awesome as the rest of your lovely home.

  3. This should be a great before and after, and I know you're going to kill it! Our powder bath actually had a similar vanity that I didn't like, so my husband found a pedestal sink on Craigslist. It was cheap with clean lines and the perfect way to lighten up the space!

  4. Fun times! I'm thinking maybe that skinny molding was maybe intended to be painted out-with everything above it- to mimic a super thick crown? But if so not sure why there's paper above it. Excited to see the transformation here!

It has really great bones! I also think that little thin piece of moulding is to make the crown appear larger. But, only if you painted it all one color it would definitely look thicker and prominent.
Can't wait to see how you decide to transform the powder room.

  17. OMG your house is so beautiful!!! I think it's a good choice keeping the vanity to save on cost - once it's painted it will feel like new. I can't believe the wooden top??? Good luck, and looking forward to seeing your progress.
